Who is karpatkey?

karpatkey is a DeFi-native organisation specialising in professional DAO finance through industry-leading research and tooling since 2020. We’ve been working with Balancer, CoW Protocol, ENS, GnosisDAO, and Lido on financial planning, operations, and strategy, diversifying their treasuries into sustainable portfolios of DeFi investments designed to support DAOs in executing their missions.

We believe in the world’s transition into trust-minimised, permissionless, and composable capital markets built on public networks and open-source software. DeFi will reshape the structure of modern finance, and we want to accelerate this by bridging both worlds.

Why karpatkey

karpatkey’s governance team taps our network of engineers, DeFi strategists, data/financial/quant analysts, and accountants for subject matter expertise. As DAO treasury developers and contributors to some of our industry’s most reputable DeFi protocols, our team has the knowledge, trust, and alignment to contribute to Balancer’s growth moving forward. Check out our values to understand our guiding and decision-making principles.

We take pride in differentiating ourselves by being a hands-on delegate, leveraging our unique position in assembling a DeFi block of DAOs with similar values.

Our contributions to Balancer

We are actively contributing to Balancer as a Treasury Manager, and currently have over $36M worth of LP positions on Balancer on behalf of the Treasuries we manage.

In addition to our work as Treasury Manager, we have a proven track record of familiarity with the Balancer governance process. We’ve authored and submitted several BIPs and external DAO proposals, all strategically beneficial to the Balancer ecosystem.

BIPs

Other Contributions.

  • We authored an [AIP-352] on AAVE Governance to build an aligned long-term strategic positioning of the Aave DAO within Balancer. This proposal made Balancer the primary liquidity pools for GHO, and established AAVE as an important supporter of the Balancer Ecosystem.
  • We have published several financial reports as Balancer DAO’s Treasury Manager. See our most recent report on reports.karpatkey.com.

Disclosure

We currently serve the Balancer DAO as Treasury Managers. We also contribute to other DeFi DAOs with similar roles, other finance-related services, and as Delegates.

2023 Voting Actions - December 4th – 8th

Proposal: [BIP-500] Root gauges bridge settings
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We support this proposal as it aims to streamline operational efficiencies and give to Balancer Maxis the tools needed to adjust the Root gauges bridge settings.

Proposal: [BIP-501] Re-Enable the THX/USDC Gauge with 2% cap [Polygon]
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We support this proposal to re-enable the gauge to THX’s 80/20 pool, as it will align more with Balancer’s initiative of having governance pools to make the liquidity sticky.

Proposal: [BIP-502] Enable DFX/ETH Gauge with 2% emissions cap and deprecate old gauge [Arbitrum]
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We support this proposal. It asks for a change on the pool and gauge for Arbitrum due to the DFX token on L2s, such as Arbitrum migrating from a bridged token to a Chainlink CCIP token.

Proposal: [BIP-503] Enable wFRK/PAR/jEUR Gauge with a 2% cap (Polygon)
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We support this proposal to enable a 2% cap gauge to this pool. The main goal is to provide liquidity for swaps between these tokens, which allows several use cases for each protocol, ranging from off-ramp capabilities to increased liquidity for borrowing strategies. It is worth mentioning that all protocols are building positions on the Balancer Ecosystem Governance, which improves the protocol resilience and governance process.

Proposal: [BIP504] Enable VCX/WETH Gauge 2% Cap (Ethereum)
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We welcome another protocol creating an 80/20 pool for their governance process, and we support this proposal. VCX uses several components of the Balancer Ecosystem in their protocol (Balancer and Aura pools), and this pool will further increase this synergy.

2023 Voting Actions - December 11 – 15th

Proposal: [BIP-505] Enable 40DFX-20USDC-40TEL Gauge with 2% emissions cap
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We support this proposal as the pool will be incentivised by the protocol, and this request is due to a change in the DFX token on the L2s where it is deployed.

Proposal: [BIP-506] Enable 80MIMO/20WETH Gauges with a 2% cap (Ethereum & Polygon PoS)
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We support this proposal as the pools’ goal is to be the main liquidity for the MIMO token on both chains (Ethereum and Polygon), and the protocols will incentivise the voting on voting markets.

Proposal: [BIP-507] Enable weETH/rETH Gauge w/ 10% Cap [Ethereum]
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: karpatkey supports this proposal as the move from the current weETH-WETH pool to this one will generate more revenue for the protocol, as the pair is 100% yield-bearing.

Proposal: [BIP-508] Utilize locked Aura to Support Ecosystem Growth
Vote: Yae
Reasoning: We support this proposal, as it gives more tools for the Balancer DAO to incentivise liquidity on core pools or to attract new partners to the ecosystem.

Proposal: [BIP-509] Wire Up Batch Relayer V6
Vote: Yes
Reasoning: This is an operational proposal asking for permission for Relayer v6 be activated on all chains it was deployed (except BSC and testnets)

2023 Voting Actions - December 18th – 22nd

Proposal: [BIP-510] Enable sDAI and sFRAX Gauge [Ethereum & Arbitrum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do this.
Reasoning: We support the addition of sDAI and sFRAX gauges so Balancer can boost its positioning as the destination for yield-bearing tokens. As it adds utility to those tokens, those pools/gauges will attract good liquidity, and the DAO will benefit from the added revenue stream.

Proposal: [BIP-511] Enable pxETH/frxETH Gauge [Ethereum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do this.
Reasoning: We support this proposal, as Balancer has a long-term relationship with Redacted Protocol, and this pool will be incentivised by it. Having another LST pool on Balancer is also good, as it generates extra fees for the protocol.

Proposal: [BIP-512] Enable pxETH/WETH Gauge [Ethereum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do this.
Reasoning: We support this proposal, as Balancer has a long-term relationship with Redacted Protocol, and this pool will be incentivised by it. Having another LST pool on Balancer is also good, as it generates extra fees for the protocol.

Proposal: [BIP-513] Seed BAL Liquidity on Avalanche
Vote: Yes, let’s do this.
Reasoning: We support this proposal to add BAL liquidity on Avalanche, making it easier for market participants to swap the asset and new buyers to acquire BAL directly from AVAX. This is another step to increase Balancer’s relevance on this chain.

Proposal: [BIP-514] Fund Balancer Maxis Q1-2024
Vote: Yes, let’s do this.
Reasoning: The Balancer Maxis executes several tasks on Balancer DAO and does them excellently. We support this proposal and are thrilled to see the results of the BD efforts in this first quarter to promote Balancer expansion as a protocol (and how we will leverage the v3 launch).

Proposal: [BIP-515] Kill Unused Gauges Week 50
Vote: Yes, let’s do this.
Reasoning: This is an operational procedure that helps to keep the protocol clean, with only relevant gauges enabled. We support this and thank the Balancer Maxis for performing this task from time to time.

Proposal: [BIP-516] Exit from D2D/BAL pool
Vote: Yes, let’s do this
Reasoning: As PrimeDAO protocol no longer supports the pool, it makes no sense to keep it alive if there is no use. We support this proposal but also believe it is important to have proper exit strategies when using DAO’s funds to seed an initiative like this.

Proposal: Balancer Grants DAO Service Provider Proposal Q1 2024
Vote: Yes, let’s do this
Reasoning: We support the grants committee and the budgets proposed for Q1. These grants are an important tool for driving integrations and development ahead of the Balancer V3 launch in Q2.

Proposal: [BIP-518] Fund Beethoven X DAO - Technical for Jan - June
Vote: Yes, let’s do this
Reasoning: The work being done on the Balancer V3 MVP and SDK is crucial, considering the impending V3 launch. We approve of Beethoven’s work thus far and would like to see this extended for six months.

Proposal: [BIP-519] Funding Proposal for the Beethoven X DAO Marketing SP - Jan - Jun 24’
Vote: Yes, let’s do this
Reasoning: Similar to our rationale forBIP-518, we approve of the work Beethoven has done thus far and would like to see this continued considering the timing. We acknowledge that this marketing budget appears large when compared side-by-side with the Technical work in BIP-518.

Proposal: [BIP-520] Ecosystem ONsite Proposal Q2 2024
Vote: Yes, let’s do this
Reasoning: We have no issues with the ONsite budget proposed. This spending is reasonable and will be a meaningful experience to strengthen relationships.

Proposal: [BIP-521] Cap individual voter weight on Snapshot
Vote: Yes, let’s do this.
Reasoning: We greet the initiative of having a voting power cap on governance matters, as veBAL has a dual function inside Balancer: an economic one when directing emissions to gauges and a governance one. We approve this proposal because we don’t see any particular issue with further veBAL accumulation by Aura under the economic lens.

Proposal: [BIP-522] Arbitrum LGP and STIP Adjustments
Vote: Yes, let’s do this
Reasoning: Changes that optimise strategy like this are important. We agree with allocating more $ARB towards pools with a better ratio of fees generated to emissions paid, as well as increasing the incentives for the sFRAX/4pool.

Proposal: [BIP-523] Enable LUMIN/rETH Gauge with 2% emissions cap [Arbitrum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: We support this proposal. The protocol will incentivise voting on this gauge, and it is another pool on Arbitrum, increasing the TVL on that chain.

Proposal: [BIP-524] Seed BAL Liquidity on Optimism
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: We support this proposal as we believe it is important to have a liquidity pool for BAL on each chain the protocol is deployed, to make it easier for users to swap the token and improve their experience with the protocol.

Voting Actions 2024 - January 1st – 5th

Proposal: [BIP-525] Business Development Funding Proposal Q1-2024 and Retroactive Q4-2023 Funding
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: It is important to have a contributor focused on business development, especially with the upcoming v3 launch. While we support this proposal, we encourage specific deadlines for completing some items listed on the proposal, such as the “competitive landscape review”.

Proposal: [BIP-526] Pay BAL to DAO Multisig signers, H2-2023
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: We support the funding of signer wallets to execute transactions on behalf of the DAO.

Proposal: [BIP-527] Gauge Kill/Unkill for 2eur Pools
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: One of the gauges was wrongly killed in the execution of the BIP-515. This proposals ask to reenable it and kill the correct one.

Proposal: [BIP-528] Enable 80PAL-20WETH Gauge w 2% Cap [Arbitrum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: We support this proposal for a gauge change from the current PAL/OHM pool to the PAL/ETH pool, and no parameter changes are being requested. Paladin is a protocol with strong connections with the Balancer ecosystem, and we are happy to help promote that.

Proposal: [BIP-529] Enable sFRAX-sfrxETH gauge [Optimism]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: This proposal asks for a gauge on Optmism for sFRAX/sfrxETH. Beethoven X is partnering with FRAX to make Balancer the liquidity place for all FRAX tokens. Balancer will also benefit from the protocol fee on interest-bearing sFRAX and sfrxETH in the pool (and the LPs). We support this proposal.

Proposal: [BIP-530] Enable sFRAX-FRAX gauge [Arbitrum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: The reasoning here is the same as the one on the Optimism pool: to incentivise liquidity on Balancer from FRAX tokens. The core pool status helps the pool generate voting incentives with part of the fees and is granted as one of the tokens is yield-generating. That boosts the rewards for LPs, potentially increasing the pool liquidity. This strategy makes sense to increase Balancer presence on Arbitrum, and we support the proposal.

Proposal: [BIP-531] Enable stERN/wstETH Gauge [Optimism]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: This pool pairs a USD-pegged token ERN, on its staked version, stERN, to wstETH. Both pool components are yield-generating, bringing additional revenue to Balancer’s treasury. We support this proposal.

Proposal: [BIP-532] Enable ePENDLE/PENDLE Gauge w 2% Cap [Ethereum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: This proposal looks for a gauge for the ePENDLE/PENDLE pool to establish substantial ePENDLE liquidity on Balancer. ePENDLE comes for Equilibria, an Aura equivalent to Pendle, and the protocol will incentivise the pool.

Proposal: [BIP-533] Initiate Cooldown to Withdraw from BAL/AURA/ARB Pool on Arbitrum
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: Balancer is looking to remove most of the ARB liquidity on this pool, and this proposal will start the withdrawal (that has a 60-day cooldown). We support this proposal as we believe that this ARB could have a better use incentivising other pools on Arbitrum.

Proposal: [BIP-534] Re-enable 50tBTC/50WETH Gauge [Base]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: After Balancer killed some gauges with BIP-515, the Threshold’s 50tBTC/50WETH pool was on this list. The protocol signalled that they wish to return to provide voting incentives to the ecosystem for their liquidity pool. We support this proposal as it brings capital to the voting markets.

Voting Actions 2024 - January 15th – 19th

Proposal: [BIP-535] Assisting DNS hack victims - final batch payment
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: The procedure laid down for the execution of this BIP is written on BIP-443. This is the final payment and we support this proposal.

Proposal: [BIP-536] Enable DOLA/mkUSD Gauge [Ethereum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: This pool is a joint initiative from Inverse Finance and Prisma. Both protocols intend to incentivize BAL emissions to help accelerate and deepen the liquidity of this stable pool. Eventually, PRISMA will add this pool to their Gauge controller, meaning direct PRISMA rewards.

Proposal: [BIP-537] Replace GGP Incentives On Avax
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: There was a misconfiguration of the initial incentives. This proposal seeks funds to correct that and distribute the rewards over the agreed period.

Proposal: [BIP-538] Enable ezETH/WETH Gauge [Ethereum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: This pool already has over 30 million USD in liquidity, which shows the demand for such a solution. It will be the primary liquidity for ezETH, and the protocol requests its inclusion as a core pool. We support this proposal as the LRT sector is expanding, and Balancer needs to be well-positioned to capture TVL coming from these protocols.

Proposal: [BIP-547] Migrate rETH Gauges [Arbitrum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
Reasoning: Due to a low severity issue with the current rate provider that rETH is utilising on the Arbitrum network, this proposal asks for a migration of the following pools: rETH/wETH, sfrxETH/rETH/wstETH, and cbETH/rETH/wstETH pools, all of which currently utilise the same rate provider.

Proposal: [BIP-548] Enable Gauge for sDOLA/DOLA [Ethereum]
Vote: Yes, let’s do it
