[BIP-932] Fork and Reincarnate Without a Grant

TL;DR

MAXYZ ask the DAO to approve the following:

  • Give blessing for a formal fork and reincarnation
  • Grant access to any security related materials

Motivation

Following the result of the previous fork proposal BIP-929, the MAXYZ continued conversations with partners, internal and external to Balancer DAO, and still see a path forward. As a matter of fact, feedback on our vision has been so positive that it is difficult for us to not continue our efforts.

This concise proposal is primarily asking the Balancer community for their blessing to pursue a formal fork of Balancer. We want to prevent any misinterpretations and make sure that forking is not against the wishes of the DAO.

MAXYZ have removed the grant request and will bootstrap the costs for the fork themselves.

Security

In order to properly serve the Ethereum ecosystem, the MAXYZ ask to be granted access to any security related materials related to the Balancer protocol: in particular the internal security-docs repository and the Immunefi account. We want to make sure that we fork and deploy a version of Balancer technology that adheres to the highest security standards. In order to do so, we want to make sure that we are fully aware of all of its security design choices and reported findings.

Independence

Despite continuing use and development of Balancer technology, the fork will be completely independent and unrelated to Balancer Labs and/or the Balancer DAO and its entities. Any transfer of trademarks, branding, logos etc. is explicitly excluded from this proposal. The fork will have its own entity, with its own name, its own logo and have nothing to do with the $BAL token or its governance.

Avant uses Balancer in production for pools that wrap aTokens. We would rather see that technology continued by people who already know it than watch it go dark.

The grant is gone. Trademarks, branding, and BAL are excluded. The fork would be independent of the DAO. On that basis, we support a clear blessing. BIP-929 already rejected an official, funded reincarnation. This is a narrower ask, and leaving it ambiguous helps no one still relying on the contracts.

Security access is the one piece that is not free. The security-docs repo and the Immunefi account hold undisclosed findings and program access. We support MAXYZ having what they need to ship a fork that does not reintroduce known issues. That is in every remaining user’s interest. A fork that repeats known issues is worse for users than no fork at all.
